It is critical that all students obtain your FEMA Student ID number. See below how to register to receive your FEMA student ID#.

Attendees shall have their FEMA student ID number prior to the start of class!

How do I obtain my FEMA Student Identification (SID) number?

Step 1: To register, go to https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid 1
Step 2: Click on the “Need a FEMA SID” box on the right side of the screen.
Step 3: Follow the instructions and provide the necessary information to create your account.
Step 4: You will receive an email with your SID number. You should save this number in a secure location

Students registered for this class will also have pre-coursework for this class. Please see the two attached pre-coursework materials for the students.

Students need to bring a lab-top computer with USB port. The class materials will on student flash-drives.

The following pre-coursework, will be due on the first day of class.

First, please review the "Fatal Echoes" article (attached) and you can go to the following link for more detailed information about the article: http://projects.kansascity.com/2016/firefighters/ 2

The "attached" Fatal Echoes article written by the Kansas City Star is probably one of the most well written articles about fire profession in a very long time. Within the Kansas City Star's report, please go to: "20 years of eulogies", where the Star's analysis of the 5 common factors for firefighter fatalities over the last 20 year period. Please list the common factors and how many firefighters died within each of the "5" categories. In addition, how many contributing factors (from the tragic outcomes), would have fallen into the duties and responsibilities of a safety officer? Please complete your written findings to the first day of class.

Second, please read the Fresno FD "Cortland" Multi-Agency Serious Accident Review Team Investigation Report,(attached). After reading the Fresno Investigation Report, please focus your pre-coursework within the following areas/categories: Culture & Safety / Command & Control / PPE's / Communications. Please write a "one" page "reaction paper" minimum on your findings/opinions of what you read in the Cortland after action report. Also, please include within these categories any of these categories, attitudes, behaviors, or cultures identified within the Cortland report have occurred or are relevant within your fire agency or which you have experienced? If so, please be specific and identify which one(s) and explain why they occurred?
