The Structural Collapse Specialist Academy will combine Structural Collapse Specialist 1 (SCS1) and Structural Collapse Specialist 2 (SCS2) into one comprehensive academy, providing participants with progressive training from the Awareness and Operations levels through the Technician level in accordance with NFPA 1006, Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications.
The combined academy will consist of 10 days (80 hours) of instruction and hands-on training. Participants will begin with the fundamentals of structural collapse response, including incident planning and resource requests, search practices and techniques, building shoring and stabilization, breaching lightweight and unreinforced masonry (URM) construction, hazard assessment, lifting and moving heavy objects, and simulated rescue scenarios.
The academy will then advance into technician-level operations involving Heavy Floor, Pre-Cast Concrete, and Steel Frame Construction. Advanced training will include heavy building shoring and stabilization, breaching reinforced concrete, cutting and burning structural steel members, advanced lifting and moving operations, and the fundamentals of rigging and crane operations.
By merging SCS1 and SCS2 into a single academy, participants will receive a complete and progressive structural collapse training experience, building foundational skills before advancing into complex technician-level rescue operations.
Full Academy Attendance Requirement:
Because SCS1 and SCS2 have been integrated into a single, progressive academy, all participants are required to attend and complete the academy in its entirety, regardless of whether they have previously completed SCS1 or SCS2 individually. Prior completion of either course does not exempt a participant from any portion of the combined academy.
The curriculum is structured so that skills, concepts, practical exercises, and team-based operations build upon one another throughout the academy. Requiring full participation ensures consistency in training, reinforces foundational skills, establishes common operational practices among participants, and prepares the entire class to safely progress into advanced technician-level structural collapse operations.
